How to Map a Network Drive on a Mac

Mac OS X provides a simple way to map a network drive. This allows you to access files on a shared folder on a remote computer. To do this, you’ll need to enter the path of the network drive. Then, you’ll be able to access the contents of the drive from any device.

The most common type of network drive is a NAS (network-attached storage) device. It is usually made up of one or more computers that act as servers. In addition, it has multiple drives. These NAS devices can be assigned to a group of users, providing a central storage solution. As a result, it is a great alternative to cloud storage.

You can access a mapped network drive in your desktop’s Finder window. This is done by double-clicking the icon. Alternatively, you can use a shortcut key combination of Command + K. After you do that, you’ll see a new menu appear, allowing you to connect to a server.

Once you’ve successfully mapped a network drive, you’ll be able to access its contents as a standard folder. If you wish, you can also create an alias of the drive, which will allow you to reconnect with just a click. Whether you need to access files on a remote server or are just curious to see what’s on your network drive, mapping a network drive on your macOS is easy.

First, you’ll need to open the Mac OS Finder app. Finder is the default file manager in macOS. Next, you’ll need to navigate to the Users & Groups menu. Typically, this is located at the dock, although you may need to use a keyboard shortcut to find it.

During the logging-in process, you’ll be prompted to enter a username and password. You can either type in your login details or select “Remember password in keychain” from the “Password” box.

When you enter the information, you’ll be prompted to enter your user name, the path to your network drive, and the password you’ve saved in your keychain. Finally, you’ll be prompted to select which folders and servers you want to allow users to connect to.

Usually, a mapped network drive will stay connected even when your mac reboots. If it won’t, try ejecting the drive. However, if you’re experiencing problems, you might need to contact the IT Services Help Desk for assistance.

Once you’ve mapped a network drive on your mac, you can easily access it from your desktop. A mapped network drive is similar to a mounted drive in macOS, but it will be available to you all the time. Just like a mounted drive, a mapped network drive will appear as a desktop icon. Double-click it to access the content.

There are other methods to map a network drive on your mac, such as a VPN connection. However, a VPN may be slower than an on-campus network connection. Additionally, you may need to connect to a UO VPN. Regardless of the method you choose, you’ll need to know the IP address of your network server.
